Traffic noise is regarded by most people as a stress factor, in particular in urban areas. A research project funded in part by the German government has fathomed ways to reduce noise by means of electronics. At the IAA motor show for commercial vehicles, automotive supplier Eberspaecher shows a prototype of a muffler which makes use of active noise cancellation.
Conventional mufflers contain several reflection chambers to reduce the noise generated by the combustion process in the motor. For the 'ActiveSilence' technology, Eberspaecher radically changed the muffler design: it replaced the variety of chambers replaced by one single loudspeaker generating counter-sound to the noise. According to Eberspaecher, the system reduces the noise volume by up to 10 dB, about the equivalent of a 50 percent reduction.
